A semi-inground pool is designed to be partially buried, not fully buried like a traditional in-ground pool. Its advantage comes from being installed partially in the ground while using a sand bottom and simplified construction.

If a pool is going to be fully buried on all sides, a true in-ground vinyl liner pool is usually stronger and often more cost-effective.

When fully buried, a semi-inground pool:

• Uses similar excavation and concrete requirements
• Has a 52″ wall instead of a 42″ wall, increasing cost
• Loses its main pricing advantage
   

At that point, you’re paying more without gaining meaningful benefits.

A semi-inground pool is ideal when it is:

✔ Installed on sloped or uneven yards
✔ Fully buried on one side and exposed on the other
✔ Built with a sand bottom instead of grout, keeping costs down

Yes. All semi-inground pools require a concrete collar for structural integrity.

Even at the shallow end, the pool must be buried at least 12–18 inches to allow the concrete collar to be poured properly.

They are less expensive than in-ground pools only when installed as intended — partially buried with a sand bottom.
